St. Geroge's (Not the one for old retired people)

Tuesday 15/07/14 and Wednesday 15/07/14

Today we woke up like usual and had breakfast. A plumber was supposed to be coming over to fix out toilet at 8:30 am (Did we mention that our toilet wasn't working right? Yeah...). Well that was 8:30 am island time, so he actually showed up at 10 am. He started working and we just waited around. Shawn, the "mechanic", said he would be by before 12 pm as well to show me the car and take me into town to get all the registration, licensing, insurance stuff done. I halfway didn't expect him to come, but he did at around 10:30 am. He showed me what he had done with the car and it sounded 1,000,000 x better! He also told me there were so more issue that needed to be fixed like the steering (this I know was true. That car steered like a 300 foot boat.) He said we could talk about all that when we got back from town. I asked Cher if she was okay staying with the plumber and she said she was, so I went with Shawn into town.

It was my first time in town, and I am glad that someone else was driving because I have no idea where in the heck we were. As soon a you turn off of the main road everything is one-way streets that all look the same. Shawn knew exactly where we were going and everyone who worked at each of the places. Now I am not sure if they were all just ripping me off, but it didn't seem that way. If anything it felt like having a native with me gave me some clout. People were super nice and fast in helping me. Shawn then took me home and I left him with our car again so that he could fix the steering and the drivers side window (yeah that didn't work either...)

We then had lunch and met up with Cher's footsteps buddy Britni for some touring and dinner. A footsteps buddy is a person assigned be the S.O. organization to take you under their wing and help you learn to live on the island. She took us both into town and showed us the "mall", where the public hospital is (kindof), and some small shops. She then took us to an "island famous" bakery that does this thing called "build your burger Friday". Its basically what it sounds like. The bread there is very soft though, so it makes it worth it. After that we went back to her house. Her husband Adam and son were there waiting. We visited for a while and then had dinner. She made us pulled chicken sandwiches and a salad. It was very good food and nice to have someone to hangout with.

We came home feeling much better than we had the day before. They guy working on our car hadn't stolen it and was actually fixing it, someone had invited over, and we were full. When we got home Cher went to shower again (Sorry, it sounds like I don't ever shower, I do. Just my showers are a lot less exciting apparently) and again there was a roach on the shower curtain. I killed it and decided that they must be coming up the drain. we decide to cover it each time we are done showering and see if that helps. I then showered (See!) and we went to bed.

On Wednesday we were invited to a YSA (young single adult) activity. I guess when you are new they just want you to come to everything. Hah. We also asked Britni to show us where the private hospital is because that is where Cher is going to be delivering and to show us where Cher's Dr's office is. Britni came over in the afternoon and we went up. We didn't actually know where the Dr.'s office was and there are no addresses here, so we couldn't look it up. we got some directions from a girl who had seen him before and went searching. We found where we thought it was and asked a local guy and he confirmed our hunch. Check. Then she showed us where the hospital was. It'll take 15-20 minutes from where we live to get there, so it's not too bad of a distance. The question is whether I will remember how to get there when the time comes. Cherish's sense of direction here is significantly better than mine, which is awesome in most cases but when she's in labor I'll probably have to drive. :) We'll do some practice runs just to make sure I remember how to get there. At the YSA activity we felt more welcomed than we had on Sunday. It took place at the senior mission couples' house which overlooks an entire bay area. There is constant wind, their house and yard are spacious and well kept, and they have a nice, new car. *sigh* There were 3 pairs of elder missionaries and 1 set of sisters, all of which work different areas around St. George. We were also able to talk to the local, new members, all of which were very friendly, warm, and inviting. Sloppy joes were served for dinner- it was a new experience for the non-Americans. However, the jello salad was probably the more daunting of the foods for them haha. It was a very enjoyable evening just getting to know one another.

As of Wednesday evening no new creatures have entered the house, so the the plug seems to be working thus far. Cher is very happy. :) Also we didn't see Shawn at all today. Maybe he did finally steal our car. Jokes on him though, his car that he left with us is way nicer. Unless he stole that one too...
